Before you, or your contractor, begin any construction, plumbing, mechanical or electrical on your home or rental property, proper permitting must be obtained at City Hall. Once permits are obtained, the City’s Building Inspector will make periodic visits to review the progress of the project, and to make sure that all work is being done according to the City code respective to the job being done.

The City of West Orange has adopted the following:

  • International Building Code & Residential Code
  • International Plumbing Code
  • International Electrical Code
  • International Mechanical Code
  • International Property Maintenance Code
  • International Fire Code
  • International Fuel Gas Code

NOTE: Each of these International Codes are available for review at City Hall. These books must remain in the building, however, you are welcome to stop by and look through them during City Hall office hours.

Every new business (whether newly-constructed or simply under new ownership) requires an Occupancy Permit. A copy of your tax certificate from the State Comptroller is needed to process your application. Inspections will be conducted to ensure code compliance by the Fire Marshal and the Building Inspector.
